At the Second WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit held in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a commemorative postage stamp dedicated to Ashwagandha, one of India’s most significant medicinal plants. The release symbolized India’s rich heritage in traditional medicine and its growing contribution to global healthcare systems.
The summit, organized under the aegis of the World Health Organization (WHO), brought together policymakers, health experts, researchers, and traditional medicine practitioners from across the world. The primary objective of the summit was to promote the integration of evidence-based traditional medicine into modern healthcare and to recognize its role in achieving universal health coverage.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), widely used in Ayurveda, is known for its adaptogenic, anti-stress, anti-inflammatory, and immune-boosting properties. By issuing a commemorative stamp, the Government of India highlighted the scientific relevance and global acceptance of Indian medicinal plants, while also encouraging research, standardization, and sustainable cultivation of traditional medicinal resources.
Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s holistic approach to health, which focuses on prevention, wellness, and harmony between mind and body. He noted that traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy have played a vital role in healthcare for centuries and can complement modern medical practices when supported by scientific validation.
The WHO Global Traditional Medicine Summit also showcased India’s leadership in promoting traditional medicine at the international level, particularly through initiatives such as the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine established in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The event marked an important step toward mainstreaming traditional medicine within global health policies, fostering international collaboration, and strengthening the role of natural and indigenous therapies in future healthcare systems.
